About this artwork
For the second part of the 'Winter & Spring' diptych, bright colours have been used to provide an impression of the new growth that is associated with that season. The aim was to illustrate the transition from winter to spring by leaving one side of the canvas (the ‘winter’ side) sparser and more desaturated, fading into a richly-textured and brightly-coloured abstract landscape that evokes small flowers and berries against a backdrop of bright,…
natural greens.
In the creation of ‘Winter & Spring’ it was important that some white should show through the splatter layers. For this reason, the paint mixtures were splattered directly onto the unpainted white canvas. The areas of white that show through help to create the desired ‘wintery’ effect, while also helping to isolate some of the splatter-marks so that they can be better-appreciated for their formal qualities.
Like all of the paintings in this series, 'Spring' benefits from strong angled sunlight or spotlight illumination.

Matthew Hynds is an artist based in Sweden whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. In addition, his art has been featured in publications such as Art Reveal Magazine. Hynds's current abstract works explore light and how it interacts with the 3D shapes and materials that he applies to canvas. He describes his artistic practice as being determined by the timeless dialectic of chaos and control.
