About this artwork
Part 1 of a 2-part diptych.
Like all of the pieces in the current series, this one is the result of experimentation. Among other materials, wall filler and baby powder-based paint mixtures have been used to thicken the acrylic paint in different ways, creating a variety of exciting opportunities for mark-making.
This piece in particular exhibits highly expressive mark-making - a result of big violent actions that have been used to apply the various… paint mixtures to the canvas. The long worm-like shapes are created by loading the baby powder-PVA glue-paint mix onto the fingers and flicking the entire arm in a fast wave motion. It is the PVA glue that provides the elasticity, holding the worm-shapes together as they fly through the air.
Care has been taken to balance the big expressive shapes with smaller impressions. These have been rendered with pearlescent white paint mixed with yellow, blue, purple and red, to give the impression of sunlight shining on falling snow.

Matthew Hynds
Sweden
« I use thickened paint mixtures and light-reflective materials to create dynamic and varied abstract landscapes on canvas. My inspiration is the natural world. »
Matthew Hynds is an artist based in Sweden whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. In addition, his art has been featured in publications such as Art Reveal Magazine. Hynds's current abstract works explore light and how it interacts with the 3D shapes and materials that he applies to canvas. He describes his artistic practice as being determined by the timeless dialectic of chaos and control.
