About this artwork
The picture was taken plein air in Bergell in front of a stone that Alberto Giacometti described in a childhood memory ("Yesterday, drifting sand"). It is the "dark stone" that had frightened him. After painting with charcoal in watercolours, the artist drew his own felt head, a self-portrait above it. For him it is an expression that we all carry such dark stones within us, which are destructive, frightening, and which we prefer to forget and accommodate…

« I paint landscapes that are less concerned with naturalistic reproduction as they are with capturing rhythms, the empty spaces in the landscape. »
It was his discovery of a surrealist exhibition in Munich at age 16 that set Oppermann on an artistic path. Inspired by mountains since childhood, he partners ‘en plein air’ painting with studio work to create unique representations of natural landscapes and people in motion.
