About this artwork
The English term "phoney" already indicates that this is a kind of "image forgery". The original motif of a press photo shows the arrest of suspected black drug dealers by white police officers in South Africa's Soweto. But in the painting, the arrest is rewritten as an escape story. Whether this ultimately succeeds depends on the narrative of the particular observer. The interpretation sovereignty of the artist is lifted in favor of the viewer.…
The telephone booth at the left edge of the picture is unusually exposed. On the one hand, it serves as an incomplete patron of the title. On the other hand, she plays ironically with the topos of the escape vehicle in the movie "Matrix". But this cell, albeit obsolete, offers no chance of escaping to another (image) level.
