In this work, I seated my model outdoors, in the shade of the garden on a sunny summer's day. I wanted to capture her figure in natural sunlight, and to include her surroundings, suggesting a secluded garden at the height of summer. As always, I am interested in capturing the natural grace of my models, and so I let them decide how to pose. The mood I wanted to evoke here is one of ease and reflection in a natural but sheltered setting. I used muted… colours and tones to establish a sense of serenity in the scene, yet there is mystery in the situation that perhaps suggests a story or provides clues to her interior life.
« Painting for me is recapturing the experience of seeing. »
