About this artwork
As the Covid pandemic arrived, my academic commitments have transitioned to online mode. Nothing was keeping me in Chicago. It was the perfect time to set off driving across the country, documenting its melancholy outside the urban centers.
I could physically escape the city, but the theme of abandonment stayed with me. I was resonating the most with the places evocative of loneliness and isolation. The proposed painting depicts what used to… be a convenience store, in its dilapidated condition, along the desert highway in New Mexico.
My intention was not to fetishize the decay itself. On the contrary, I was fascinated by finding the profound humanity underlying this decaying material world. An old man painted by Rembrandt is the last remaining inhabitant of the structure. He is all alone in the house, but he made his peace with it. He is the ambassador of the past humanity, guardian of our cultural heritage, the only constant in an ever-changing world.

Growing up in 1960s USSR meant Michael Goro quickly learned how to live with contradictions. Starting out painting government propaganda, he began his pursuit of a freer artistic path as soon as restrictions eased. Now gaining inspiration from his current home - Chicago, Goro uses his eye for architecture and an anthropological spirit to achieve interesting, carefully choreographed visual storytelling.
