About this artwork
The current paintings are adding a significant philosophical dimension and altered emotional effect by sandwiching a variety of urban motifs between sections of the pure color surface. These busy modern environments, with their complex machines, contrived to convey people great distances at great speeds, are now bracketed at top and bottom by an envelope of emptiness—a neutral space where there is nothing to see or hear. These pristine, empty spaces…
summon up a Buddhist meditative state where the mind is stilled and a sensation of complete equanimity and stasis is achieved. These soft gray panels provide the alternative and antidote to the busy urban scenes they hold between them. They are a resting place for both weary eyes and overstimulated psyches, and they suggest the artist’s recognition of an important universal truth: we need balance in our lives—we need silence and emptiness to relieve us from the mechanical noisiness and clutter of our daily lives.

« I’m interested in traces of humanity rather than humans - environments that show layers of human experience, change, decay, entanglement... »
Growing up in 1960s USSR meant Michael Goro quickly learned how to live with contradictions. Starting out painting government propaganda, he began his pursuit of a freer artistic path as soon as restrictions eased. Now gaining inspiration from his current home - Chicago, Goro uses his eye for architecture and an anthropological spirit to achieve interesting, carefully choreographed visual storytelling.
