About this artwork
The work is based on the poem by the artist, "Rooks Murmured". The poem is a memory of a colony of rooks that lived at the end of the garden of the Old Forge in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The commotion was constant and the interplay between the blacksmith hammering, and rooks murmuring, a daily ensemble. The following is an extract;
"Distant murmuring echoed, in the ink-blue-black dawn,
Crisp morning silence fractured, shrieks, withering caws,
Penetrating… — high-pitched swooning, twisting, plotting,
Beaks wide, eyes bold, feathery trousers —
Council overlooking, within a stick-entwined,"
Wind-blown colony, surveying, witnessing, reassuring
Daybreak from high,
A signed copy of the poem is provided with the painting.

Michael Heffernan is an Irish Contemporary Painter in the American South whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in England and Ireland. His abstractions are based on early memory and place importance on memories as a source of comfort in times of uncertainty. In his artistic process, Heffernan endeavors to find a space between extemporaneous brush strokes and deliberate mark making that translates into an energetic and interesting visual narrative.
