About this artwork
The Hide & Seek series explores the shifting boundary between revelation and concealment. It reflects the tension between the impulse to express and the social strategies we use to withhold.
Each work begins with an intuitive construction of a vivid, complex ground. Layers of color, material, and gesture accumulate into a dense visual field — an expansive multiverse of possibilities.
This abundance is then partially veiled through predominantly… white overpainting. Rather than erasing what lies beneath, these layers conceal and reveal at once, allowing fragments of earlier strata to remain visible.
The resulting paintings exist between clarity and ambiguity. Their quiet surfaces carry both honesty and deception, suggesting that what we reveal is inseparable from what remains hidden.
Michael Ploederl, a painter with roots in multimedia art and experimental sound, uses painting as an essential analog counterpoint to his digital practice. His technique is a dynamic dialogue with the canvas, evolving through spontaneous gestures, layered surfaces, and, in certain series, meticulous conceptual planning reminiscent of data visualizations. His works radiate emotional tension, embracing both vibrant chaos and contemplative restraint, and invite viewers to experience doubt, awe, and the profound mystery of existence.
