About this artwork
The title Quart is definitely an allusion to the fourth interval in classical music theory. Music plays an important role in the artist's oeuvre and he is always looking for connections between the arts. In graphic work, squares are nested inside one another. But as with all painterly works, color is essential. Here it is an ultramarine blue that appears four times in different shades. The other colors are somewhere between gray, brown and ocher…
values and support the blue that shines mysteriously in the center. The overall color impression is a visual treat and despite its compositional rigor, it appears lively in its own way.
