About this artwork
I was struck by this vase of roses over the weekend and carefully brought them back to the studio. What was it? What was the attraction? The inspiration? Well, I knew they would wither away before I could see them again a week later. There was a tenderness, a preciousness, a quality I wanted to preserve, to linger with. I chose an aluminum panel as support which allowed me to be rough with my application: scratching away and adding layers. My intention…
was to find the fragility of the subject in a strong, aggressive execution.

« In my paintings, I attempt to translate the emotion aroused in me by the impact of my visual observations using color relationships, light, form, and composition. »
Michael Ryan is an artist based in the Netherlands whose paintings have been exhibited worldwide. While a scholarship student in NY, an invitation to paint portraits in Europe led to private sponsorship, gallery representation and inclusion in important collections. His artistic expression is influenced by being in the moment and the act of paying attention. A self- described "poetic realist", Ryan is especially inspired by what he observes around him. Primarily working with oils and pastels, he is fascinated by the relationship formed between colors. His bold pieces are painted on specially prepared aluminum panels or linen. His lifelong exploration of self through yoga and meditation, as well as the introduction to mindfulness through the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn in the early ‘90’s, was instrumental in expanding his early love for Rembrandt, Hals, Manet and Degas to the artists Pierre Bonnard, Nicolas de Staël, Henri Matisse, Wolf Kahn and Joan Mitchell.
