About this artwork
I am known as iMiteLex—a name derived from the Greek word ημιτελής (unfinished, incomplete or something that remains in progress or awaits completion)—my work embodies the deep, persistent feeling that something is always missing.
In this series of paintings, I expose my inner self, grappling with the fragmentation of identity within a capitalist reality that constantly takes pieces of me along the way. This struggle materializes through layers… upon layers—forms that vanish beneath new surfaces, covered in faded colours.
Once again, I turn to gesso as both a tool of concealment and revelation, while the muted tones of raw umber reflect the weight of my emotions. These works are deeply personal, a balance between exposing my imperfections and obscuring certain truths from the viewer. In the end, each piece remains in a perpetual state of incompletion—a testament to the essence of being unfinished.
Michail Fotopoulos a.k.a. iMiteLex, is an abstract painter and digital artist with a background in theatre. He employs a mix of acrylics, collage, gesso, and mixed media on canvas or paper in an intuitive process, developing layers through palette knives and scratching techniques. Fotopoulos' work emanates an intriguing dialogue between imperfection and hope, creating a fractured world imbued with themes of resilience and transformation, and leaving his audience to navigate the labyrinth of their own interpretations.
