About this artwork
This sculpture was inspired by the movement the flower's petals as they grow and open in my studio garden. I quarried this pure translucent piece of California Alabaster from U.S. Gypsum Quarry in the Anza Borrego Desert. I free carve the stone by roughing it out with a pneumatic air chisel. The sculpture is then entirely hand carved with Mililani rifflers and sandpaper. The sculpture is then pinned and sleeved so it can be rotated on its base.…
The marble base is designed, drilled, and carved with a grinder and carbide sanding discs. The final step requires hand sanding with water and carbide sandpaper to 6000 grit. It is then sealed and waxed when dry.
