About this artwork
Engram 8 was made on a residency at the British School at Rome in 2011. Images of a cracked mirror in the Villa Torlonia in Rome, in what was Mussolini's bedroom, and the bullhorns of the public address system used when he gave speeches are intertwined as a mediation upon the dark vestige of his regime upon the present.

« I’m interested in how images materially work, how they turn to signification, how they circulate, migrate, and disseminate. Toward this end, my practice is pictorial and fluid. »
Mick Finch considers himself as a pictorial artist. The award-winning photographer and painter’s works blend painting and photo-digital collage forms. Having originally completed his studies in painting, since the 1990s his compositions have concerned the ‘appropriation of images and processing them into pictorial regimes’. Finch explores varying transcriptive techniques through uniquely themed series, which include the use of archival images, and some of the earliest photographs he remembers seeing as a child.
