Ever since I was a little girl sketching in Calcutta, I’ve been mesmerized by the sheer grace of dancers and the fierce, quiet strength of the women around me. This painting brings those two lifelong inspirations together. Drawing deeply from the vibrancy of African culture, I wanted to capture a woman entirely lost in her own rhythm. She isn’t performing for an audience; she is caught mid-spin, completely claiming her own space, joy, and freedom.… I chose to paint her using bold lines and fractured, colorful geometric shapes because I believe that is exactly how we are built—our lives are made of many different, sometimes complicated pieces that ultimately come together to form something undeniably beautiful and whole. I hope that when you look at her, you can almost hear the music she is moving to, and feel that same radiant, grounded energy in your own life.
Mihira Karra, a self-taught artist from Calcutta, India, channels her background in international development and a lifelong passion for drawing into striking narrative fabric collages and mixed media works. She meticulously assembles intricately cut fabrics in a mosaic-like technique, blending portraiture with layers of cultural and personal biography, and often experiments with charcoal, paint, and watercolors. Her art radiates empathy, resilience, and a celebration of unheard stories, inviting viewers into an intimate connection with the strength and dignity of her subjects.
