About this artwork
This was the second piece since my recent return to pastels, a deep dive into a more abstract, cubist style. Worked in oil pastel with oil-based pencil for the finer lines, it breaks the figure into angular, interlocking shapes rather than rendering it realistically.
I've always been drawn to dancers, captivated by their grace, strength, and movement. Painting them is my way of capturing an energy and beauty I admire. This piece revisits a subject… close to me: an African dancer I first portrayed in a fabric piece some years ago, reimagined in a new style and palette of blues and greens, colors I fell for while working in watercolors.
Breaking the form into small, intricate segments demanded real precision, which is why I picked up oil-based pencils for the finest lines. Moving from realism toward this angular, abstract style has been a true challenge, one that lets me see my subjects differently, reaching past the form to capture a feeling, an energy, the essence of the dance.
