About this artwork
This work began life when I was living in London (1994), part of a collection of works I called “The Body Parts Series”. I was amazed by London and my ideas were my interpretation of the life I saw around me, as I experienced the energy, the beauty and the culture of a hundred cultures that surrounded me, giving a greater desire to absorb and create. quite feeling ready let him go, until now, as I can do no more, so Martyr has to find another wall to occupy. Part life-cast, part modelled, cast in Herculite plaster, then dressed in thinned and treated lead, ostrich eggshell (I collected), colourful paint and reflective gems, attempting to radiate the light that surrounds Martyr. Mista Fig is an experienced British sculptor who has exhibited his work internationally. He discovered a passion for art as a young boy, when he would take off-cuts of wood from his grandfather—a coal miner—and turn them into fruits of his imagination. Seeking always to create with passion and freedom, he constructs primarily figurative sculptures that tell stories across a range of themes.
