About this artwork
In this work, I fused a textile called “Koko dunda” with sculptures to evoke a sense of continuity and unity.
This is a fabric from Burkina Faso formerly called "tchiè ti barala" in the Malinké language ("your husband does not work"). In Africa, we tend to estimate whether your husband takes care of you properly or not based on your clothes. It was therefore a fabric worn by underprivileged social classes. This fabric has been revalued by Burkinabe… fashion, so I chose to make a magnificent painting with my technique.
The dyers used a palette of undulating colours inspired by ancestral techniques, most certainly to represent the dynamism and depth of our traditions.
The sculptures illustrate individuality within collective coherence.
Placed in a home, this piece brings an energy of tranquility and reflection on each person's place in the greater fabric of society.
