About this artwork
In .old Tradition, it was a must to have a well in the center of each village as a gathering place where villagers meet to fill their jugs with water. This habit was an essential meeting place for the inhabitants to exchange stories meet their lovers or gossip.
In downtown beirut souks before the civil war destroyed it the basin (al Intabli) was a replica of these places. People met for a coffee break, a smoothie, a refreshment or a date.… The painting express the essence of that scene filled with life where Strangers interacted among each other. This deeply human habit is lost in our modern time as people are always in a rush and don’t have time to mingle.

Mona Asmar Hecker has been exhibiting her works since the 1980s in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. Her artistic style has matured to the point where she now feels compelled to translate disturbing world issues through her compositions. Hecker paints endangered species and tackles the distress of war while also portraying vibrantly colored butterflies. She paints using acrylics as it adapts best to her needs, and adamantly ‘does not follow any rules'.
