About this artwork
This deeply personal self-portrait captures the complex emotions of living with a chronic illness. In this evocative artwork, I confront the reality of feeling isolated and unseen amidst the past shadows of my condition.
As a woman navigating the challenges of chronic disease, I candidly portray moments of withdrawal, where the outside world fades into obscurity. The nature of the symptoms compounds the sense of invisibility, leaving us, the patients,… feeling unheard and misunderstood.
Yet, amidst the darkness, glimmers of hope and resilience emerge. The delicate interplay of gold leaf and white marks amidst the shadows symbolizes the inner strength and determination that fuels my journey.
Despite the weight of our circumstances, we refuse to succumb to victimhood, instead embarking on a journey of profound inner work and self-discovery.
"Withdrawal" invites viewers to bear witness to the silent struggles of chronic illness, while also celebrating resilience and fortitude.
