About this artwork
In Sofia, the young woman's direct and magnetic gaze establishes a silent dialogue with the viewer. Her face, with its timeless gentleness, stands out against a background of warm and golden hues, evoking memory, the earth, and a form of forgotten sacredness.
Sofia is depicted in traditional Ukrainian clothing, richly adorned with delicate patterns and symbolic embroidery. Her flower crown, inspired by folk adornments, celebrates beauty, vitality,… and cultural roots, while also giving the figure an almost iconic dimension.
Beside her, a ewe and her lamb reinforce the pastoral and spiritual dimension of the work. They evoke innocence, protection and transmission, while situating the scene in an idealized rural setting, imbued with gentleness and resilience.
Through this portrait, I pay homage to a culture and an identity deeply connected to the land and traditions.
Sofia is part of my "Lost Paradises" series.
