The painting depicts an atmospheric view from the bridge over the Rhine towards the historic old town of Basel. At its center rises the imposing Basel Minster with its distinctive towers, nestled among the tightly packed houses of the old town.
Powerful, vibrant brushstrokes connect architecture, lush vegetation, and the moving waters of the Rhine. Warm ochre, red, and green tones contrast with the cool… blue, turquoise, and violet hues of the water and sky.
The traditional ferry, powered solely by the current, can be seen on the Rhine. The Ferris wheel, which is erected during the Basel Autumn Fair, can also be seen in the square by the cathedral.
