Ghost Trees results from salt water thrown onto the beaches, resulting from megathrust earthquakes along the Cascade Subduction Zone just a few miles off the Pacific Northwest shoreline. It’s only a matter of time, every 300 years or so tension builds as the Juan de Fuca plate slides beneath the North America plate; the last recorded cataclysmic earthquake occurred in 1700. Many hours were spent digging sun baked, dry root and cactus fibers out of the desert, scrubbing, scouring, peeling, hollowing, then hand smoothing with dozens of layers treatment. Ghost Tree represents the fearsome power of Mother Earth, and how we humans must bend with her power, utilizing resilience and hope to adapt and survive.

Nath Raye is an acclaimed artist from the United States whose work has been featured in international publications. She discovered the healing properties of art after recovering from a spinal injury by collecting sun baked cactus carcasses in the desert and turning this raw material into sculptures. Inspired by the beauty of nature, each piece Raye crafts is made from a natural piece of wood or fiber found in the desert.
