About this artwork
Picasso once said when asked about his inspiration "I don't seek, I find". Not that I would ever claim to be in the same league as Picasso, but I too am fortunate to find inspiration without looking for it. I had an idea to paint an image of a girl at dusk, when as the daylight fades the lights of candles begin to glow. Somehow she ended up in a lake - I don't know why, but I just trusted my intuition that this was how it ought to be. Without the…
goodwill and fortitude of my model I would never have gathered the information to enable me to paint the picture. Although it was a calm summer's evening the candles kept blowing out and took crucial minutes to re-light. It became so dark that the flash began to fire on my camera. I cancelled the flash as soon as I realised but when I looked at the photographs I found that I preferred the way the flash illuminated the lilies in the foreground.
