About this artwork
I became aware that I was rushing to finish a painting for an exhibition, so rather than ruining it I decided to use the short period of time I had to 'play'.
I have drawn from the figure almost every week for decades - something that I enjoy, but also keeps my visual awareness high to maintain my craft skills as a figurative oil painter (I have piles of life drawings languishing, unseen, in plan chests). A friend had recently returned from India… where she had been on a block printing course. She had kindly brought me some natural Indigo dye and I decided to explore its potential by creating some small life paintings. I am very inexperienced in water based painting - I find oil paint dries to fast for me! It took me some time to begin to familiarise myself with the medium - I destroyed a lot of failed attempts on the way. This is one of the few I thought worth keeping.
