About this artwork
Painting based on a view of the Pentland Hills, Scotland. I wanted to rework certain sections of the first version of this picture (particularly the horizon line and foreground brushwork) and decided to make a second painting based on the same reference image. As with other paintings in the series, the dark (Prussian Blue) sky remained.
Oil on linen (with aluminium stretcher) rather than cotton canvas w/ wooden stretcher. Work started in late 2019… and completed in 2020.

« The ways in which human activity, over the course of millennia, creates and destroys topographies is the central idea behind my paintings. »
Niall Stevenson is an artist based in the United Kingdom whose paintings have been exhibited in Scotland, Japan, and Germany. He describes his landscapes as centering around the impact that human activity has upon rural environments and their associated topographies. Stevenson is particularly fascinated by the concept of layered histories, extending back to the Neolithic period, within scenes that capture his interest while walking in Scotland.
