About this artwork
This piece was born from a collision of memory and mood, a response to the wild, beautiful and layered landscapes of Australia. I wanted to capture the feeling of being surrounded, almost swallowed, by chaotic beauty. The hill became a metaphor: for identity, for history, for the way nature and culture stack themselves in us over time.
I hope viewers feel a kind of vibrant disorientation — not confusion, but curiosity. That they’re drawn in by the… colour and rhythm, then held by the strange familiarity of the forms. It’s a place that doesn’t exist yet feels like somewhere they’ve been.
The style is instinctive and deliberately surreal. I lean into abstraction to bypass literal interpretation — scraping, layering, rebuilding until the canvas feels alive. It’s about movement, tension, and the emotional residue left behind when control gives way to chaos.
Nicholas Broughton is a self-taught painter deeply influenced by his artistic family background. He employs bold, abstract, and expressive techniques, combining vibrant contrasting colors, geometric patterns, and figurative forms that capture rhythmic movement and intimate connections. His cityscapes and Favela series transform dense urban layouts into lively visual choreographies, inviting viewers into a world brimming with poetic humanity. His art strives to evoke atmosphere and emotion, encouraging an immediate, visceral response from anyone who encounters his work.
