About this artwork
This is a portrait of my best friend, Tom, a talented musician. At the time I started this painting in my studio in West Chelsea, Manhattan, Tom was in the middle of a breakup, and was really heavy hearted. He said he felt naked all the time, so I asked him to take his shirt off and surrender to the nakedness. Though a very handsome fellow, Tom has scars from surgeries involving his esophagus when he was in 8th grade, of which he is self-conscious.…
I think on some level, posing for me at such a tender time, and allowing the scars to be seen, was a healing experience for him, and when that is the case it's healing for the painter as well.
This painting is of a modern man. One who comes to the realization that his vulnerability is his strength. He is in touch with his feelings even if they make him uncomfortable. Modern masculinity is facing our demons, not allowing ego lead us into misogyny. We respect and admire women.
In the USA now we have a long way to go. Lead by example, men!

« What keeps me coming back to painting is to watch something I only dreamt of taking physical form, and in that process surpass the dream. »
