About this artwork
The painting "Sortilège" echoes a piece I composed for piano. I chose an imposing size (97 x 130 cm) to allow the viewer to be physically immersed in the canvas. To evoke this sonic battlefield, I technically prioritized texture and movement. "Sortilège" is a canvas where melody becomes texture, reaching saturation and abstraction. The abyssal black is represented in the manner of deep fortissimos, like a mysterious foundation. Touches of ochre and…
sienna bring emotional warmth, while colored grays and hazy whites suggest a sense of weightlessness. The tension is palpable between deep shadow and bursts of light, between heaviness and lightness. Just like the piano piece it accompanies, "Sortilège" was created to provoke a physical emotion.

« By creating a sensory and emotional bond born of color and light, I seek to take the landscape into a form of abstraction, of lyrical poetry. »
Nicolas Ruelle studied Literature and Art, then worked as a film composer before pursuing his artistic exploration with painting in the early 2000s. By merging color and movement, he has developed a style that lies between figuration and abstraction, imbued with a lyrical spirit. Since 2008, his canvases have been exhibited in several galleries, notably in Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Singapore. At the crossroads of nature and intimacy, Nicolas Ruelle's paintings are landscapes for shared meditation, evoking wind, shadows, earth, and water. The artist prioritizes atmosphere above all else, creating a sensory immersion where detail dissolves into immensity. By first employing a lively and rhythmic gestural style, he gives the work a distinctly physical presence, rooted in the materiality of the canvas. He then pays particular attention to light to harmonize the space and capture the ephemeral beauty of the suspended moment.
