Though Singleton prefers to keep interpretation open in her work, her intention with this piece was a portrait of a young queer coming into their queerness. They gaze into the abyss with both attitude in their attire and trepidation of what or who they will encounter. The passive lion behind them is perhaps a representation of them or their familiar - a fierce beast still unaware of their power yet beautiful and fabulous nonetheless. Singleton recently… finished this piece at an artist residency in the west coast desert of Canada. She went walking daily in the desert and found many sun bleached materials including a horse bridle that she painted in as the young queer’s harness. This painting was also undoubtedly influenced by a safari in Botswana that the artist had taken last summer. The piece is made with iridescent ink pigments and glitter paint that changes with the different light of day.
« I'm a passionate, messy, emotional artist concerned about our present and future who's often battling to silence my head. »
