With this work, Singleton celebrates the exquisite love between women, drawing inspiration from Ovid's and the story of Iphis and Ianthe. This tale, which addresses gender issues and dysphoria, resonates as powerfully today as it did in 8 CE. Iphis's mother, fearing her husband’s vow to kill their child if it was a girl, raises Iphis as a boy. When the time comes for marriage, Iphis, believed to be male, is arranged to marry Ianthe. They fall deeply… in love, but Iphis is haunted by fear of what might happen if her true gender is revealed on their wedding night. In desperation, Iphis's mother takes her to the temple of Isis, the goddess of transformation, praying for help. In response, Isis transforms Iphis into a man, allowing them to marry and live happily together. This powerful narrative of love, identity, and transformation is beautifully reflected in Singleton’s work.
