About this artwork
The composition of the picture arises from the principle of 'picture in picture'. Four image levels are nested into one another; one sees a skull, a hand holding a grapevine, another hand with a brush. The fourth picture shows a landscape. The surreal effects result from the fact that the brush appears to be painting the landscape from its picture plane and individual grapes have fallen out of the picture.
