About this artwork
This picture is the naturalistic version of the series. The cow skull is depicted in the colors that define it: ocher tones, umber and the corresponding mixed tones heightened with white. The skull is presented against a background reminiscent of the sky. He seems to be floating. The pictures 'Cranium I - IV' are overpaintings of originally naturalistic skull studies as shown here - in this version.
