About this artwork
The picture pays homage to one of the outstanding painters of German Expressionism. Mauritius processes a photograph that Ernst Ludwig Kirchner took of himself in his studio in 1913/15. The self-questioning on which the photo is based was the delightful motif that should come into its own in this expressive portrait. Mauritius explores the “answer” to this self-questioning: the self-confidence and the vulnerability of the artistic personality.
