About this artwork
Norman Lerner's portraiture has been heavily influenced by Japanese art of the late 19th century and early 20th century. He especially is intrigued by the simplicity of the faces which still can convey emotion juxtaposed the complexity of their costuming. In order toads a bit of more interest to the face he has applied gold leaf composite around the eyes. There is no question that his early work as an editorial fashion photographer in the early 1950's…

Lerner's current compositions are inspired by Japanese figurative art from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He creates in a spontaneous and chaotic manner, employing acrylics, oils, and gilding on canvas.
