About this artwork
This work is a personal reinterpretation of the most sacred myth of the Abakua culture: The tragedy of Princess Sikan.
In this canvas, I abandon my palette to use darker tones. The painting narrates the moment when Sikan, the woman who found the sacred fish, Tanze, in the river and heard the divine voice, became the sole keeper of the great secret. Through my characteristic painting style and composition laden with symbolism, I portray the vulnerability… and strength of this deity of Afro-Cuban memory. It is a piece of profound cultural respect where Pop Surrealism is imbued with ritual, silence, and heritage.
