About this artwork
Red is the predominant color in this painting. You can see the shapes of flowers and leaves. The brushstroke is powerful, this is about pure painting.
At first sight, nature seems to be the subject of the painter Beate Köhne, but she is more interested in natural processes and energies than in the lifelike image. That is why she does make sketches, but does not transfer them one-to-one onto the canvas in the studio, but is based on lighting moods… and colors. Large areas alternate with fine structures, light spots with dark shadow zones. But how many leaves can a picture take? How specific can shapes be so that they don't restrict the imagination too much? These are questions the artist constantly grapples with while painting.

Beate Köhne
Germany
« I am fascinated by the imaginary pictorial space. That which arises when dynamism and open space meet in the real image space. »
Beate Köhne is a German painter whose works have featured in prizes, publications and exhibitions nationally. Inspired by her youth spent surrounded by nature on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest, she explores the processes and energies of nature through amorphous lines and shapes. Her paintings showcase a consistent colour palette and impressive balance, ultimately offering the viewer a visual discovery marked by softness and harmony.
