The Christmas Goat is one of the most ancient Slavic symbols, embodying strength, abundance, and renewal.
In pre-Christian times, the goat personified fertility and light: it was believed that she was the one who brought the Sun back after the longest night of the year. That is why, during Christmas rites, she was greeted with joyful songs, caroling, and wishes of prosperity in every home.
Carollers wearing goat masks went from house to house, “driving… away” the darkness and invoking well-being, health, and joy.
Even though the tradition has evolved over the centuries, the symbol of the goat still reminds us of our roots, the strength of our kin, and the importance of the light we carry into the world.
