About this artwork
The tail becomes a metaphor for the cyclical journey of self-discovery, the fluidity of desire, and the struggle to own one’s identity. Wild, sensual, and unapologetic, the… leopard embodies the instinct to resist conformity and reclaim control over one’s narrative despite fear or rejection.
A surreal palette creates a dreamlike space where identity and desire intertwine. The wandering tail echoes the persistence of instinct and longing; holding it transforms chaos into a declaration of autonomy and self-acceptance.
Exploring freedom, repression, and rediscovery, “Blue Leopard” celebrates queer resilience and authenticity. It invites viewers to confront their conflicts and embrace the untamed parts of themselves.

« My art is selfish. Picturing something on my canvas, I take it into my soul. I draw only what I consider very beautiful, what I want to possess. »
His paintings focus on the male body, using vivid color, sensuality, and art-historical references to challenge discomfort around male nudity. He presents masculinity through tenderness, desire, uncertainty, and emotional openness rather than dominance.
A second direction transforms Soviet portraits, sculptures, and propaganda objects. Through overpainting, fragmentation, and playful interventions, Balbyshev strips them of ideological authority and creates new visual and emotional meanings.
Both directions connect personal experience with questions of identity, memory, power, and cultural transformation. His works are held in private collections across Europe, North America, Australia, and beyond.
