About this artwork
The Sacrifice of Isaac is one of the most mind-blowing of all the bible stories for me. Especially as an artist. To capture that drama that was inspired by art history - after Rembrandt, and especially Caravaggio - what could I do to add to the contemporary understanding of this tale?
So, of course, I have spiritual/religious questions, how can I not? My country is full of religious imagery and architecture. So, as I consider these enormous questions… on canvas, I have to come to some conclusions: I understand the leap of faith required; you must trust the bungee rope to stop you from falling to your doom- that's the sense of stomach inducement I feel about this story. For Abraham... is there any greater sacrifice than the one Abraham was prepared to make? I don't think so.
My challenge, in making this a 21st-century example, was to make sure that I show that there can be no angel to stop the action. A modern-day Abraham, has no angels to interfere.
