About this artwork
Work inspired by symbolic figures dominated by imposing chessmen and playing cards. The man at the bottom hides or seeks comfort behind a mask, almost a refuge from the dominant chess that would force him to become part of the game. The woman above looks in the mirror and, in doing so, seems to lend her face to one of the two enormous playing cards that exert almost unstoppable pressure. The whole is an exploration of the complex theatricality of… human existence through the use of oil, imprinting intense emotions into the enigma of figures and colors. The expressionist approach blends with metaphysical and surreal elements, creating a visual narrative that invites reflection. This canvas becomes a window onto a parallel world, rich in symbolism and characters, bringing vibrant energy and an invitation to contemplate the multiple roles we play in life into the space of its owner. Will the game of life overwhelm us? or will we be able to take over the reins of it?
« 'Beauty will save the world' by Dostoevsky is a symbolic phrase for me because of the therapeutic, magical, and mysterious content inherent in the logic of art. »
Paola Imposimato is an award-winning painter and draftsman whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout her native Italy, as well as in Austria and France. She defines her artistic style as "contemporary Renaissance", as it has a solid figurative base that is also structured on Greco-Roman art. Imposimato is often inspired by portraiture (of real and imaginary characters), the range of human emotions, poetry, historical re-enactments, the world of music and theater.
