The forest is the threshold: a place of initiation, a "raw material" where one loses oneself in order to find oneself again. Engraved on copper, the metal of Venus, conduction, magnetism, union. In copper engraving, the image is created by subtraction (engraving) and is revealed in a mirror: here, the opposite is not an enemy, it is the very condition of vision. The negative becomes positive, the profound becomes surface: The lake is the unconscious,… the mirror that returns not only forms but truth. The Stilt Walker and his long levers cross the boundary between the visible and invisible worlds, like an initiate who does not reject the darkness: he passes through it. Verticality here is not escape, it is conjunction—holding together sky and abyss, light and shadow, form and reflection.
In this sense, the work speaks of one thing: transformation. Not the victory of light over black, but their alliance. The Stilt Walker was born as a mirror image and a rite of opposites. Engraved in drypoint and aquatint on copper, the work depicts an initiatory landscape.
Pasquale Scognamiglio is a Neapolitan artist whose work spans painting, printmaking, and visual experimentation. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, he develops a poetic and symbolic language through mixed media, watercolor, glazes, and layering on paper and antique materials. His works intertwine myth, spirituality, memory, and Neapolitan identity in compositions suspended between the sacred and the profane. Sign, material, and transparency become tools of evocation, capable of transforming the image into an intimate space of vision and contemplation.
