About this artwork
According to 'Bacchante' (1848, Musée du Petit Palais, Paris), a variant of 'Woman bitten by a snake' (1847, Musée d'Orsay, Paris), these two sculptures scandalized in their time, two masterpieces works of Auguste Clésinger.
I am seduced by the beauty and frank sensuality of the female body offered to the eye, here Apollinie Sabatier, a famous demi-mondaine, friend of romantic artists including Charles Baudelaire.
In levitation or weightlessness,… although plump, Apollinie rises above the pedestal, in the night of the era which regresses, among other things with regard to the representation of the body which has again become scandalous, censored here and there.
"It is pure orgiastic delirium, the disheveled Maenad rolling at the feet of Bacchus, the father of freedom and joy (…) A powerful spasm of happiness raises the young woman's opulent chest by its contraction and makes it gush out with sparkling breasts (…) One of the finest pieces of modern sculpture."
