About this artwork
„Balancing Act“ combines the balance between abstraction and realism in it ́s technique, with the contemporary depiction of the male figure, which is also „balancing“ on a wooden plank.
As part of the more recent work in Patrick Domo ́s series „U“, the painting shows many earthy tones and unlike the earlier work, where only female models were shown, this painting goes in another direction. Key inspirations for „Balancing Act“ are the color choice of… the British painter Lucian Freud combined with the abstraction used by the german painter Gerhard Richter. Thick oil impasto covers the canvas inviting for a closer look to see the finest details and brushstrokes.
The motives that are prevalent in the series, are a combination of the artists memory, but also try to mirror modern society by taking commercial- and social media photography as a basis for the painting. By choosing those two influences Domo is trying to bridge the gap between the past and the present.
« I navigate the dangers of assessing and labeling while also capturing the true core of a character. »
Patrick Domo paints large-format figurative and architectural compositions in oil on canvas. Each painting is built in a single continuous session — often twenty-four hours straight, wet-in-wet, before anything dries. The parts he prepares are the bones. The parts he can't control are what make the painting alive. Born in Bavaria, based in Berlin for several years, now returned. Work held in private collections across Europe, Switzerland, the United States, and Russia. patrickdomo.com
