About this artwork
This painting began as a fractured portrait and slowly revealed its meaning only after I stepped away from it.
From a distance the image resolves into a single composed face. But as the viewer moves closer, hidden structures begin to appear — a second face trapped behind the first, a third mouth that knows it will never speak, and an ear turned sideways from the exhaustion of listening.
The main figure holds itself together, while the erratic lashes… and fractured forms break the surface calm. Beneath that calm lives a silent observer — permanently contained and forced to watch without voice.
Like much of my work, the symbolism was not planned. It emerged through the process of painting itself.
This piece explores the tension between the identity we present to the world and the parts of ourselves that remain unseen but always aware.
Paul Brandwein Sr. is a self-taught painter whose medium is primarily layered, textured acrylic on canvas, shaped by a background of personal transformation after a traumatic brain injury. His techniques blend intuitive abstraction, contemporary Cubism, and Neuro-Expressionism, featuring impasto that mimics scar tissue, shifting forms that emerge instinctively, and colors that bleed to echo memory and emotion. His art radiates raw honesty, evoking spiritual depth and the experience of survival—each piece a poignant testament to endurance, revelation, and the reconstruction of self.

In 2025, I released “From Canvas to ColorBook,” a published collection where I translated my abstract paintings into line-art form for the public. It’s part of how I share my work beyond the canvas and invite people into my creative world.
