About this artwork
This is where everything started.
Before faces had names. Before ideas learned how to speak.
I wasn’t trying to build anything when this came into being. I was mapping pressure — the way thoughts stack, smear, and collide when there’s no clear path yet. What looks chaotic is actually structural. Every mark is a decision about where weight can rest.
The lines that surface and disappear are not figures; they are memory fragments. Some stay visible.… Others sink back into the ground. That tension is intentional. This work isn’t about what’s remembered — it’s about what refuses to disappear.
Over time, everything I’ve made has traced itself back here. The faces, the divisions, the confrontations — they all grow out of this terrain. This is the room beneath the rooms. The place the Palace stands on.
Nothing is resolved here.
It doesn’t need to be.
Paul Brandwein Sr. is a self-taught painter whose medium is primarily layered, textured acrylic on canvas, shaped by a background of personal transformation after a traumatic brain injury. His techniques blend intuitive abstraction, contemporary Cubism, and Neuro-Expressionism, featuring impasto that mimics scar tissue, shifting forms that emerge instinctively, and colors that bleed to echo memory and emotion. His art radiates raw honesty, evoking spiritual depth and the experience of survival—each piece a poignant testament to endurance, revelation, and the reconstruction of self.

In 2025, I released “From Canvas to ColorBook,” a published collection where I translated my abstract paintings into line-art form for the public. It’s part of how I share my work beyond the canvas and invite people into my creative world.
