"Gaia" is from my series of work in 2023 called landfill, a project that covers environmental, self obsession and death.
The name "Gaia" represents the Greek Goddess of the earth (Mother nature) The labels "made in China" are actually printed or labeled on each bunch.
EVERY YEAR MORE THAN 2,000 TONS OF FAKE FLOWERS ARE IMPORTED FROM CHINA TO SOUTH KOREA, MOST OF THESE FLOWERS WILL END UP ON SOMEONE’S GRAVE AND THEN LATER INTO A LANDFILL. FAKE… FLOWERS CONSIST OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES, PLASTICS, VINYL AND IRON WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO RECYCLE, PROLONGED SUNLIGHT CREATES MICROPLASTICS WHICH ADVERSELY AFFECTS THE HUMAN BODY AND THE ENVIRONMENT. FURTHERMORE, WHEN INCINERATED OR PUT INTO A LANDFILL, HARMFUL SUBSTANCES SUCH AS DIOXIN ARE GENERATED.
This photograph is number one of ten from the encaustic series, because encaustic it cannot be rolled and so comes framed.
*Please note. The above measurements is the outer frame size. Image size 57cm x 46cm.
Paul Gadd is a British photographer based in Seoul, deeply rooted in classical film photography and darkroom printing, with extensive experience in fashion, portraiture, and documentary work. His technique is hands-on and experimental—scratching and toning negatives, applying mixed-media during hand-printing, and finishing with processes like bleaching or encaustic, making each print a unique original. Through his evocative images, Paul channels his personal experiences and surroundings, conveying a rich tapestry of emotions—from melancholy and anger to humour and love—inviting viewers to deeply connect with his evolving visual narratives.
