About this artwork
Haniwa are terracotta figures that were made for use in rituals and buried as funerary objects during the Kofun period of Japanese history, approximately between 300 and 538 AD. I was fascinated by their empty eyes which speaks a lot to me about their lives. In creating this piece, I poured my fascination with historical depth and human expression into the cut-out canvas. Melding acrylic, oil, and sand, I strived to blend fine art with realism… and oriental motifs, crafting a figure that speaks to timeless elegance and poise with a sense of tranquil nobility and profound reflection.
