About this artwork
‘Aphar’ is the Hebrew word for dry earth and dust. It is used here as a homophone for the word ‘Afar’. Our return to dust, although perhaps harder to accept than the profoundly abstract notion that we come from dust, is inevitable and perhaps easier to grasp. Whether we are inclined towards biblical faith, philosophical enquiry or scientific evidence, it all comes down to dust. ‘From Aphar’, or ‘From Afar’, is a representation of our human endeavour…
to reach out into the beyond, to our own ultima Thule.

« As dust settles upon a given surface it begins to transform that surface into a kind of drawing. When I make a dust sculpture I am lifting that drawing and reshaping it. »
Paul Hazelton’s fascination with dust originated from a deprivation from these often unappreciated forms of matter. Brought up in a pristine home, the British visual artist was only allowed to draw with a pencil in the sterile setting of a covered table, where even the dust of his graphite pencil were swiftly rubbed and cleaned away. These forbidden particles would later preoccupy his practice.
