About this artwork
In my mind, I've had this drawing since my visit to Raffles Lighthouse in April 2023, where the dark skies were illuminated by bright, shimmering light. Although I was there during the day, the dark skies and light in the drawing are products of my imagination. My usual pen could not achieve the effect I wanted, so I transitioned from dry to wet mediums. I chose sumi-e and gansai for their colors and characteristics. The different shades of black…
in sumi-e represent the nighttime sky. While I still used pen ink, the lines blended into the paper grain due to the shimmer, creating a beautiful natural tonal effect.
This is the first in my series of Singapore lighthouses. Singapore currently has five operational lighthouses, each with a unique appearance. Embarking on research about these lighthouses sounds like an exciting project.
